Earth 46

Earth 46 is one of the seven "unknown worlds" in the Post-Flashpoint Orrery of Worlds. It is home to a grim young Batman with a unique, unrecognizable rogues gallery.[1]

History

Once considered the second most mysterious of the "unknown worlds", it is the last of them to not be charted by Justice League Incarnate or explored by an adventurer from Earth 0.

When Bruce Wayne was a child, his parents were murdered. After their deaths, he was institutionalised for a time at Arkham Asylum's children's wing where he was treated by Dr. Charles Quinton. In reality the children's wing was a front for a secret society called the Stadtgeist, where Quinton used techniques developed by an imprisoned scientist called Franz Ebner to turn his patients into living weapons for the Stadtgeist known as "Gesitermen". Bruce's "dark aura" and some of his memories were sealed away by Quinton, as he was too young to handle their power; and due to his privileged background was out of the Stadtegist's reach once he was discharged.[2]

At some point after Bruce's release Quinton disappeared along with all of his patient files. Bruce grew up to become Batman, a vigilante who patrolled Gotham City. He was considered an outlaw by the Gotham City Police Department but secretly worked alongside Detective Jim Gordon.

Gotham was targeted by a serial killer who left a distinctive pattern of puncture wounds on their victims. At the same time, a deranged supervillain named Crytoon who modelled himself on an old cartoon character of the same name also began terrorising the city. With the threats to Gotham escalating Batman decided to fake Bruce Wayne's death and become Gotham's full time protector once the case was complete and both were caught.[3]

Batman beat up Crytoon and left him for the police. Meanwhile, Gordon realised that the serial killer was targeting Quinton's former patients, but when he went to meet with one of them, a priest named Father Vincent Strasbourg, Strasbourg tried to murder him. He was saved by the serial killer who immediately surrendered.[4]

Batman's investigation lead him to the Stadtgeist's headquarters in Gotham's largely abandoned west side. There the Stadtgeist leader Doctorgeist shocked him in the energy point at the base of the neck, releasing his memory blocks. A group of street kids known as the Ratz, who were also opposed to the Stadtgeist, had infiltrated the meeting and pulled Batman out, taking him to their leader Sage in the sewers. Sage knew what Doctorgeist had done to Bruce and stabilised the process to prevent it killing him, but locked him away as he was afraid of what Bruce would become when it was finished. Bruce managed to escape and made his way through the subway, but when he reached a platform he was attacked by a Geisterman known as Wounder. In the fight, he pushed Wounder onto the tracks and impassively watched as he was killed by an oncoming train.[2]

Meanwhile, Gordon held the pale woman prisoner in a storage locker as she told him that the police would kill them both if he tried to turn her in. She told him via telepathy about the Stadtgeist and explained that she had been murdering the Geistermen to stop their ultimate plan. She said that he needed to free her to save Gotham.[2]

Two police officers working for the Stadtgeist tried to kill Crytoon, who was also a Gesiterman, during his transfer to Arkham; but he murdered them and escaped. He ended up taking refuge in a trailer in the desert where he met a psychotic child known as "Little Joe". Joe helped him to kill two more cops who came looking for him and begged to go with him. After a moment's consideration Crytoon agreed and they drove back to town in the stolen police car.[2]
