Synopsis for "Better at Terrible Things"

David attempts to hunt down Massacre, who has been quiet for two weeks, healing up after their last fight, or biding his time. He arrives too late to a building in flames, discovering that Massacre has killed Dawnfire, another former member of the African Justice League type group, the Kingdom.

Later, he asks Matu about his parents, and Matu responds that he vowed to be nothing like them, as they were oil barons who exploited the land and its people. David replies that his own parents died of AIDS, leaving his brother and he alone, and although Matu believes they would be proud of him, David is not so sure they would be if they knew the whole truth.

Ten years ago, David and his brother Isaac are serving as child soldiers for the warlord General Keita, of the Army of the Dawn. Having displayed superior qualities and an excellent ability to kill, the brothers have been promoted to Keita's elite squad of men. Keita and the boys have tracked Keita's enemy, Okeru, to a small village full of women and children. Keita orders them to blow up the compound but they refuse to take such action against innocent children. As Keita demands that David follow his orders, declaring himself chosen by God to lead his campaign, Isaac suddenly fires his rifle into the air, giving away their position, forcing them all to flee.

Later, a furious Keita beats Isaac for insubordination and is about to kill him when he grabs a rock and bashes his head. Over David's pleas for him to stop, Isaac shouts that he and David have given Keita everything, and that everything Keita is is because of them. In a sudden move, Keita slices Isaac twice across the chest with his machete and Isaac falls backwards off a cliff. Keita then orders his men to kill David, but he manages to break free and run into the jungle.

Later, a soldier reports that they weren't able to find David, and Keita is not surprised, saying that the brothers would never have stayed tame for long. He goes to sleep, but is drugged and kidnapped by David in the night. As he drives him across a plain David explains that although he and his brother were scared when Keita first raided their orphanage and kidnapped them, it didn't take them long to find their place in Keita's army, and to want to make Keita happy so much that they killed for him. He declares that he won't kill anymore, and Keita thinks he's going to let him live. But instead he has brought him near Okeru's camp. He leaves him alone, tied up, fires a shot into the sky, and leaves Okeru's men to find the general.

Days later, in a refuge for ex-child soldiers, Matu finds David and tries to get him to respond positively. David is depressed, declaring that he is better at doing terrible things that the other child soldiers.

Back in the present, David tells Matu that he needs to track down the last members of the Kingdom rather than hunt Massacre. Matu expresses confidence that David will stop Massacre, to which David replies that he will, as it takes a monster to catch a monster, and he feels that he himself is a monster.
