1992

1992 saw a new arrival on the comics market: Image Comics. Jim Lee, who had become a super-star with the best-selling X-Men #1 the year before, shakes up the comics market with titles like Youngblood, Spawn, Savage Dragon and WildC.A.T.s (Volume 1). The company drastically changes the style of comics art and market, with creators like Lee, Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane and Erik Larsen having more control over their creations than they would have had with Marvel or DC. Other companies follow suit by emulating the visual style of Lee.

On September 5, Batman: The Animated Series premiered on Fox Kids. Helmed by Bruce Timm, Alan Burnett and Eric Radomski, the series told Batman stories in a dark deco style, based on Burton's Batman and Fleisher's Superman. The series also introduced Renee Montoya, who was also introduced to the comics.

Across Superman titles, "Panic in the Sky!" saw the return of one of Superman's most dangerous foes - Brainiac. Another critical story that took place in 1992 was the "Breakdowns" story-arc, a fifteen-chapter serial which ran through alternating issues of Justice League America and Justice League Europe. This storyline focused on the attempted assassination of League liaison Maxwell Lord and a fight with the otherwordly Extremists.

1992's Annuals comprised a theme event called "Eclipso: The Darkness Within" which pitted the major characters of the DC Universe against the menace of Eclipso. The former teen super-heroes, the Titans, had troubles of their own in 1992 as they were forced to confront a futuristic band of Team Titans and the powerful son of Donna Troy and Terry Long in "Total Chaos".
