The Pike is a spear in Dark Souls.

In-Game Description

Long spear with a very long red hilt. Traditionally used by groups of soldiers. Specially designed for distance thrusting. Has the longest range of all non-projectile weapons, but its very length makes it somewhat difficult to handle.

Availability

Can be bought from Andre of Astora in the Undead Parish for 2,000 souls.

Characteristics

The Pike is, for the most part, very similar to the Spear, but trades higher requirements, weight and stamina consumption in exchange for slightly greater reach and higher damage. The Pike and the Spear share similar movesets too. The exception is the Pike's running attack: unlike the Spear (which simply does a running lunge) the Pike's running attack utilizes the player's momentum to drive the Pike a considerable distance, hitting enemies multiple times. This gives the Pike interesting tactical and strategic options, but the maneuver has its drawbacks as it takes quite some time to perform, potentially leaving the player open to enemy attacks, and it also requires enemies to not strafe. This attack can also cause the user to fall off edges if performed in an inappropriate location. On rare occasions the pike may "Launch" an enemy with its two-handed rolling attack. So far this has only happened on a killing blow.

Despite what the item description says, the Pike does not have the longest range of non-projectile weapons. The Silver Knight Spear, Dragonslayer Spear, Moonlight Butterfly Horn, and Demon's Spear are all longer.

The Pike has the highest damage potential out of all spears with a quality build. It outperforms the other physical damage spears due to higher base damage or Strength scaling, and lacks the split damage of the spears that have higher AR. (Split damage is penalized against enemy armor, which lowers the performance of weapons that deal more than one damage type, despite their high AR.)

Scaling Percentage Values

The following chart lists the scaling percentages when this weapon is fully upgraded. Be advised that:

  • Scaling letters are not an accurate indicator of how a weapon scales, players should look at the percentage scaling of a weapon.
  • Magic and Enchanted upgrade paths reduce Physical Damage while adding Magic Damage, splitting damage between two types. Strength and Dexterity scaling is drastically reduced while adding Intelligence scaling.
  • Divine and Occult upgrade paths reduce Physical Damage while adding Magic Damage, splitting damage between two types. Strength and Dexterity scaling is drastically reduced while adding Faith scaling. Divine adds Divine Auxiliary and Occult adds Occult Auxiliary secondary damage types.
  • Fire, Chaos, and Lightning upgrade paths remove all stat scaling and splits damage between two types. Chaos path adds Humanity Scaling.
  • Raw upgrade path caps at Weapon Level 10 while drastically reducing physical damage scaling and adding slightly more base damage.
  • Crystal upgrade path dramatically increases the base damage of weapons while rendering them unable to be repaired.
  • For PvE purposes all weapons will be better on the Standard Upgrade path to +15. This is because the Split Damage of elementally infused weapons is not added together. The values are reduced separately when going through enemy defenses leading to less damage in practice due to the values of each damage type being smaller.
