Catalysts

Catalysts are casting tools in Dark Souls used for casting sorceries.

Usage

Catalysts are equipped as weapons and can be used on either the right or left weapon slots. Pressing R1/RB or L1/LB (depending on which side the catalyst is equipped) will cast the selected spell. Depending on the catalyst, pressing R2/RT or L2/LT may result in either a strike or thrust attack.

Each catalyst has a magic adjustment stat that determines the power of the sorceries cast with the catalyst. Magic adjustment affects the damage of sorceries that deal direct damage, and the damage added to weapons by weapon augmentation sorceries. For most catalysts, magic adjustment scales with the caster's intelligence. Exceptions are the Oolacile Catalyst and Oolacile Ivory Catalyst, both of which have static magic adjustment, and the Tin Darkmoon Catalyst, which has magic adjustment that scales with faith instead of intelligence.

Certain catalysts have unique traits. The Tin Banishment Catalyst and the Demon's Catalyst albeit weak in comparison, may serve as weapons due to their higher than usual physical damage capabilities. The Tin Crystallization Catalyst and Manus Catalyst are by far the strongest catalysts in terms of Magic Adjustment, however, they both halve the casts per spell a player may use.
