Sully

Sully, known as Spirits Lance in Japan, is one of the main protagonists of the American version of Contra III: The Alien Wars. He is the western localized version of Lance Bean, one of the original protagonists of the Japanese release of the game.

History

In order to keep consistency with the changes already made to the original timeline in previous western-localized game releases of the Contra series, Lance Bean, one of the original protagonists of Contra Spirits, was changed into Sully for that game's western release; and at the same time, Sully was made into Scorpion's (Lance's codename in America) descendant.

In 2636 A.D., both Sully and Jimbo (another character whose identity was changed to fit with the American continuity) battled against the invading alien forces of the Red Falcon army –which had unleashed a full-scale attack on planet Earth– on a conflict that came to be known through history as the "Alien Wars".

Notes

• After their appearance in Contra III, both Sully and Jimbo were removed from the official Contra timeline and no mention of them has been made along it since; conversely to what happened to Mad Dog and Scorpion, who were both made into their own characters and given their own distinct physical appearances and backgrounds.
• Both Sully and Jimbo reappear in Contra 4, although only as unlockable characters, with no background or involvement in the game's storyline.
  • Sully's alternate color swap in Contra 4 can become Scorpion's coloration.
  • They are called "Spirits Lance" and "Spirits Bill", respectively, in Japan, in reference to their appearance in Contra Spirits (the Japanese version of Contra III).
  • Both Jimbo and Sully's sprites are somewhat shorter than other characters. This means they may be harder to shoot at by enemy bullets, although the size will also affect their aiming height as well.
