~ Description from the official Contra: Operation Galuga website |
Ariana is a playable character in Contra: Operation Galuga.
She was voiced by Angelita Esperanza.
History
Ariana is a guerilla warrior native to the Galuga Archipelago. She fights alongside Bill Rizer and Lance Bean against the Red Falcon army threatening her home on the island.[1]
She is first seen chilling within an island village of Galuga at night. She is surprised to suddenly see an unusual meteor shower rain all over the island.
Gameplay
Ariana can utilizes an alternate variant of the Crush Gun when the weapon power-up is obtained. Ariana's Crush Gun variant is Crush Grenades: a "Shower Crash" variant that fires Arc-like bombs that explode on contact with an enemy or surface. When upgraded to Level II, the bombs produce shrapnel capable of additional hit radius. Her Crush gun overload is the Vortex: a large gaping space-like hole appears above the top of the game screen that eats all enemy projectiles fired for a short time, by using gravity to suck them up into the hole.
Ariana is capable of Sliding. The action button makes her perform a barrel roll upward. Further presses will then allow her to perform a drop kick and slide combo afterward.
Ariana's exclusive spirit extends the length of her dash, useful for gaining horizontal distance.

Trivia
- In Contra: Operation Galuga, her assigned character color is gold.
- Ariana and Lucia are the only two playable human characters with a one word name displayed. Every other playable non-robot character has their full name displayed; both first and last name.
- In earlier gameplay footage, Lucia had her last name displayed, making Ariana the only human character with a one-word name displayed.
- Ariana being a native from a tropical island where heroic commandos fight against invading alien forces and helping them out may have been inspired by the character Anna Gonsalves (played by Elpidia Carrillo) from the 1987 science fiction action film Predator.
- The character Wendy Millers from the Konami Game Book Series: Contra gamebook also shares similar traits and apparently was also inspired by the same film character. Ariana could in turn have borrowed these traits from Wendy instead.[3]
- Ariana makes a guest appearance as a playable character in the "Operation Guns" DLC of the roguelike shoot 'em up game, Vampire Survivors.
