Ryloth

"Another armed occupation is not a free Ryloth. How long before I am fighting you, Master Jedi?"
Cham Syndulla, to Mace Windu[src]

Ryloth was a planet in the Outer Rim that was the homeworld of the Twi'leks. It had vast deserts like the Jixuan desert in addition to its many forests. It was also home to many non-sentient species, many of which were deadly like the Lyleks and Gutkurrs. As the planet was far from the galactic core, slavery was common on Ryloth a fact that was both known and tolerated by the Republic despite the planet's representation in the Republic Senate.

History

Clone Wars

Battle of Ryloth

"I promise you, Cham, the Republic will not abandon Ryloth. I've heard enough of your promises, Jedi. The fact remains, if we stay here without reinforcements, we're all going to die."
―Generals Ima-Gun Di and Cham Syndulla[src]

During the Clone Wars, Ryloth was attacked by the separatists thus cutting off the inhabitants of the planet, the Twi'leks from all outside help, aid and contact with an orbital blickade.

A Twi'lek freedom fighter group led by Cham Syndulla and the few clone troopers of the Republic who stationed on the planet bravely held back the separatist forces without any outside help, but they could no longer persevere and the separatists took control of the planet.

While people fought bravely for freedom, their senator Orn Free Taa remained on Coruscant and claimed that he could provide more help to his people from there. However, Cham Syndulla and the others considered senator Taa a coward who uses his office to enrich himself and not to help his people. Eventually relief finally did get through the separatist blockade. Syndulla and his men could therefore survive and fight for another day.

The separatists appointed Wat Tambor as the Emir of Ryloth and, under his leadership, the separatists starved the people of the planet and plundered them from their treasures and values.

Finally, the separatist blockade overseen by Mar Tuuk was successfully broken by Anakin Skywalker’s forces and Republic forces marched to the planet to help Cham Syndulla and his troops free Ryloth from separatist rule.

The republic forces could not land until they destroyed the proton cannons used by the separatists to defend their stationing positions. In a small town called Nabat, Wat Tambor’s forces used the local Twi’lek residents as a living shield to protect their cannons from being destroyed by the republic. The republic, with the help of a brave Twi'lek girl named Numa, found a way to reach the separatist cannons. The local Twi'leks eventually rebelled against their captives, the separatist droids, and eventually most of the Republic troops were able to land on the planet.

Ryloth’s emir, Wat Tambor barricaded himself in the planet’s capital, Lessu, and continued his activities to plunder Ryloth from all his valuables and treasures. In addition to these, he sent droid bombers to Ryloth's settlements.

Jedi Master Mace Windu contacted Cham Syndulla, the leader of the rylothian freedom fighters against the separatists. Cham Syndulla feared that if the separatists failed, the Galactic Republic's forces would take their place as occupiers of Ryloth. Windu and Syndulla contacted senator Orn Free Taa of Ryloth and agreed that after the separatists were expelled from Ryloth, the forces of the Galactic Republic would also leave the planet. Syndulla eventually joined the forces of the republic to jointly attack the capital, Lessu and to liberate the planet from the rule of the separatists and Wat Tambor.

The attack was successful, the capital was occupied, Wat Tambor the former Emir of Ryloth and the Foreman of the Techno Union was arrested by the republic, and Ryloth was freed from separatist rule.

After the Clone Wars

After the fall of the republic and the Jedi Order, Ryloth came under the rule and the protectorate of the Galactic Empire, who oppressed Ryloth's people in the same way as the separatists.
