One month before he was due to graduate, he made the decision to leave and pursue acting as a full-time career. In 1990, whilst at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, Peter won the BBC’s Carleton Hobbs Award for radio drama.
He landed his first television acting role as a taxi driver in the movie Antonia and Jane. His qualification that led to his selection for the part: he knew how to drive.
Over the next few years, Wingfield became a British television staple and starred in numerous productions including Soldier Soldier, Medics, and the BBC mini-series Martin Chuzzlewit, as well as filming several series of commercials for Sega. Two episodes of Highlander: The Series turned into a recurring role as Methos, the oldest living Immortal and brought him to North America in 1996.

In addition to film and stage, for two years in the mid-1990s, Wingfield played the “deliciously despicable” Simon Pemberton on the long running BBC radio drama The Archers.
