A werewolf hunter was an individual devoted to hunting down and killing werewolves. Werewolf hunters included poachers who sought out their pelts for money,[1] scientific-military researchers,[2] fanatics who wanted to exterminate abominations, individuals or cults who used them as sacrifices, paranormal sporting groups, and paranormal gourmets who used them in high cuisine.[3] In other situations, the hunter simply sought the werewolf to keep them safe from harming humans.[1][3]
Examples
As a werewolf hunter, Cain sought werewolves in locations known for their sexual heat, such as Lovers' Lane and the Bronze in Sunnydale. He attracted them with raw meat and shot them with silver bullets he fabricated. He killed werewolves during their full moon transformation to skin them and sell their pelts in Sri Lanka. Cain wore a necklace in which he collected one tooth from each of the eleven werewolves he had hunted.[1] The hunter Frawley wore a similar necklace with werewolf teeth.[4]
The Scooby Gang hunted down the werewolf Oz to restrain him whenever he escaped his cage during his full moon transformation. Willow, Buffy, and Faith had shot him with tranquilizer darts to prevent him from attacking humans.[1][5][6] Angel, however, used lethal force on McManus when the werewolf attacked Nina, killing him with a silver pen.[3]
In 2000, the Initiative agents mistook Oz for a demon who had attacked them days before and captured him after shooting him with a tranquilizer dart. After witnessing the torturous medical tests they performed on Oz, Riley helped him escape the Initiative facilities and left the agency for good.[2]
Once Nina became a Lycanthropus exterus werewolf in 2003, a club specialized in serving rare and endangered animals captured her to serve her alive. While investigating who could have kidnapped Nina, Fred considered those who would sacrifice werewolves, those who wanted to rid the world of abominations, werewolf packs looking for recruits, and paranormal sporting groups. The Angel Investigations team eventually rescued Nina by exchanging her with Evan Royce, a club member who had been bitten in their fight.[3]
