Monsters is the fourth and final issue of the Blood & Trenches comic book miniseries. Written and illustrated by John Byrne, it was originally published on June 10, 2009, by IDW Publishing.
Synopsis
- The concluding issue of John Byrne's Angel WWI epic! Half a mile above the blood soaked battlefields of France, Angel must face an ancient and terrible evil, while the fate of an Empire hangs in the balance.[1]
Summary
Angel has been captive at Kakistos' hideout for three days without food. There are two German soldiers as well; their sergeant has already been killed. Angel tries to escape when Kakistos' men come for him, but he has too little strength in him to defeat them. He is brought before Crixus, who has his men forcefeed Angel the dead sergeant's blood. This gives Angel enough strength to briefly overpower them, grab a weapon, and kill them. Angel escapes without freeing the prisoners, knowing he doesn't have enough strength for it.
Angel is spotted while escaping, and the vampires chase him through the woods. He kills two of them before falling in the river. When he gets out of it, he is back in the French village. He recognizes Geoffrey's car still there. Angel sneaks into the hospital and drink some vials of blood to regain strength. Then, he sneaks into Margaret's room, who alerts Geoffrey. Soon, Kakistos enters the fray as well, knocking out Geoffrey and throwing Angel out a window. Kakistos' goons attack Angel, but he kills them. He and Kakistos fight until a cock crows, signaling sunrise is near. A plane flies over low, and Kakistos jumps onto its ladder. Angel does the same after Kakistos has climbed aboard. Kakistos disconnects the ladder, and Angel falls.
Meanwhile, Geoffrey wakes up with Margaret at his side. Just as she is about to bite him, Angel comes in and pushes her in front of a window. She burns in the sunlight. Angel and Geoffrey decides to join forces to stop Kakistos' plans for an attack on London.
They drive to Kakistos' lair and arrive at nightfall, but Kakistos has just boarded a plane and is taking off. Geoffrey drives his car as close to the plane as possible, and Angel jumped onto it. On top of the flying plane, Angel and Kakistos fight. Their fight damage the engine and the plane begins to descend. Angel throws Kakistos into the propeller and jumps off the plane before it crashes and burns. While the vampires inside surely perished, Angel finds no trace of Kakistos, revealing he has survived.
Angel returns to the lair where Geoffrey has freed the prisoners. Geoffrey tells Angel he is granted only a single moment of leniency, and so Angel leaves. The one surviving German prisoner is also released. He walks back to his camp, where his commanding officers tells Adolf Hitler never to repeat this story.
