Earthquake was the shaking of the surface of the Earth, with often mystical causes and consequences, despite a natural occurrence in places like Southern California (including the cities of Sunnydale and Los Angeles).[1] They had the tendency to either prevent an apocalypse, swallowing religious buildings whole[2] while even imprisoning dangerous individuals;[3][4] or act as portents, announcing prophecies[5] or even apocalyptic commotions of the Hellmouth.[1]
History
1800s
- 1812, Sunnydale. An earthquake caused a cave-in and swallowed the entire Sunnydale Mission building, trapping a group of Chumash warriors.[4]
- 1890s, Budapest. The Whirlwind enjoyed the chaos of a recent earthquake.[6]
1900s
- 1932, Sunnydale. An earthquake swallowed the Temple of Proserpexa, preventing the followers of Proserpexa to destroy all life on Earth.[2]
- 1937, Sunnydale. An earthquake swallowed Order of Aurelius's church, entombing the Master.[3]
- 1997, Sunnydale. An earthquake announced the prophecy of Buffy's death and the Master's freedom.[5]
- 1999, Sunnydale. An earthquake presaged an apocalyptic attempt by demons to reopen the Hellmouth.[1]
2000s
- 2000, Sunnydale. A poltergeist manifested during a party at the Lowell House, causing two earthquakes that affected the Initiative facilities underneath it.[7]
- 2002, Los Angeles. An earthquake announced the prophecy of Angel killing his own son.[8]
- 2002, Los Angeles. Storms and earthquakes accompanied the Beast's rain of fire,[9] causing thousands of deaths.[10]
- 2006, Arctic Ocean. The birth of the Twilight dimension caused various natural disasters around the world, including a seaquake throughout the Arctic Ocean.[11]
