A LEGO Set is a building kit that contains numerous LEGO bricks and other elements to assemble one or more objects and minifigures. Some sets may be assembled in various ways to allow the assembly of different models using bricks from one set. All bricks are compatible with bricks from other sets. All sets are categorized in themes.

History

In 1935, 3 years after Ole Kirk Christiansen starts producing wood toys, the first wooden toy sets are released, them being the LEGO Duck and the Wooden Train. The first set to employ the numbering system was 500 LEGO Klodser in 1948, and the first sets to use plastic bricks were the Automatic Binding Bricks sets in 1949. By 1953, the Automatic Binding Bricks are renamed to LEGO Mursten ("LEGO Bricks") by Godtfred Kirk Christiansen and they become the first official LEGO themed sets. A warehouse fire consumes most of LEGO's inventory of wood toys on February 1960, thus the production of wooden toys is discontinued and the company changes its focus to make plastic building bricks and use them in sets. Over the course of the next few years, more themes are introduced, some notable ones being DUPLO, TECHNIC (formerly Expert Builder), Town, Space, Castle, and Pirates, among many others. In 1999, LEGO launches and produces a Star Wars theme with Lucasfilm, making the first official licensed sets and beginning a trend of licensed LEGO products, with more licensed themes being introduced. The Star Wars theme also introduced battle pack sets, which usually include 4 minifigures and a few side builds. 2012 was an especially important year for LEGO as it brought upon the introduction of the Super Heroes and Minecraft themes, the latter bringing the first licensed sets to be based on a video game. The future introduction of the Pokémon theme will mark the first licensed sets to based on an anime series.
