Mirrored Maps

Docks gameplay

Mirrored Maps are maps that have vectorially transformed differences (usually mirrored, hence the coined name) between the opponents. Often, maps that are considered "Mirror Maps" are mirrored along the y-axis (i.e. vertically mirrored). This term only applies to PvP versions of the Bloons games, specifically those from the Bloons TD Battles series.

It has prominence in Bloons TD Battles 2, notably in regards to hinderance for Monkey Aces (especially before Version 1.3.0) and Blade Maelstrom abilities. It also appears in Bloons TD Battles 1, although less prominent and often vectorially transformed in a different way (e.g. Cards is actually arranged with a rotational transformation from the left opponent to the right opponent).

Bloons TD Battles 1

  • All Maps expect Super Monkey Lane
    • Maps with 180° rotation without true mirroring: Cards, Swamp, ...
    • All others are mirrored vertically.

Advantages and Disadvantages

If one side of the map has a favorable location for certain attacks, this is an advantage of Mirrored Maps for that player, and disadvantageous for the other player.

In Bloons TD Battles 2, certain maps, most notably certain medium-to-short maps such as Building Site, map side advantages are often a result of spawnpoints of towers not being equal. List of known advantages/disadvantages of map sides in Battles 2:

  • Dart Monkey: Triple Shot (does not affect Spike-o-pult or Crossbow, which both have central spawnpoints), which always spawns darts from the right. Notably a problem on Garden and Building Site.
  • Tack Shooter: Blade Maelstrom spin direction; despite 0-4-1 offering a swapped blade rotation, buying 0-4-1 is an extra micromanagement step and costs $100 more than the uncrosspathed 0-4-0.
  • Boomerang Monkey and Monkey Ace: Although both can use free special targeting options, both towers need an extra button to press to roughly attack equivalently to the opposite player. Boomerang Monkey has Switch Hands and Monkey Ace has Reverse Flight to offset the disadvantage. May be a problem for initial placement and between adjustments to special targeting.
  • Super Monkey: Specifically a problem on the map Oasis where the darts can hit the unremovable rock if playing on the right side instead of the left, because Super Monkey spawns darts from the right.
