Captain Brotius Shad was a Federation officer who had command of the kairopan shuttle. He was known to Ven Jarvik. He contacted Servalan and Dastor to report that the kairopan shipment had exceeded their flight tolerance and asked if he should dump the excess kairopan or destroy it. Servalan instead instructed him to abandon the remaining labourers (and one guard) to make room for them.
Shad was next contacted by Jarvik and played a key role in his plan to capture the Liberator. Shad and a group of guards hid in the crates of kairopan that the Liberator crew brought aboard the ship, after which they easily surprised and captured the crew. Shad teleported to Servalan's command ship to report the success to Jarvik, escorting Servalan back to inspect the prisoners.
Shad remained aboard the Liberator during the subsequent trip to Kairos. After Avon and Tarrant had bluffed Servalan into ordering the ship evacuated, she instructed Shad to kill Dayna. Instead, he accidentally killed Jarvik when he stepped in front of her. Shad subsequently evacuated the ship with Servalan. (C: The Harvest of Kairos)
