The Shine is a mysterious, unseen talisman containing potent sorcery that was mentioned throughout the short story "Chasing Midnight: The Dark Lord as a Teen". Although its appearance is not described, it is known that the Shine was small enough for a single person to conceal without arousing suspicion.
"Chasing Midnight"
The Shine was a key tool in the murderous search for immortality undertaken by the sorcerer known as Black Shroud and his business partner, Songo Songaghi, in the city of Rue. It played a role in Black Shroud's experiments on Songo's young male kidnapping victims. The talisman was stolen from Songo by Chasing Moonlight (the brother of the young witch Chasing Midnight) who hid it in an undisclosed location. Black Shroud needed the Shine to preserve his own life, so he desperately sought out the item. It was also required to keep Moonlight alive, since his mind had been lost and his body had been foully corrupted by Black Shroud's vile sorcery.
After their prolonged absences from the Shine, Moonlight eventually rotted to pieces and the once-fearsome Black Shroud was rendered defenseless. Chasing Midnight, despite the heartbreaking death of her brother, decided to continue searching for the Shine in Rue.
