The Place of Shadow was the location of the Rahi Nui, and was along the border between Ko-Wahi and Ta-Wahi (On the island of Mata Nui), it was always avoided by the Matoran. Even Bohrok did not journey there. The Toa Nuva ran into it when searching for the Kanohi Nuva. Tahu Nuva, Gali Nuva, and Kopaka Nuva found three here.
