Square stones, not to be confused with dice, are game pieces in an unnamed dwarven game of chance played in Caldara in Betrayal at Krondor.
Rules
Each player receives a small square stone with strange markings on each side. On a count of three, the players throw their stones upon the table. The markings displayed upon landing determine the result of the round.
- If two stones show "dragon" marking, the result is a "double dragon." In this event, the first of the two throwers to yell "Klapka" and grab the other's dragon stone takes the pot.
- If two stones show the "vooka" marking, the result is "vooka stones," whereupon the two throwers yell "Vooka, vooka!" and roll their stones again. The winner of this second throw takes the pot.
- If the stones land in a manner referred to as "tabled," all bets stay on the table and no one takes the pot.
- If one player throws a dragon and the others throw vookas, the player who threw the dragon wins everything and can cash out of the game.
Chapter 6
A smiling dwarf welcomes Owyn into a room redolent with hickory-scented pipe smoke and invites him to join several other dwarves seated around a small wooden table, offering a wager of five sovereigns per throw. If the party chooses to play and continue playing, they lose twice, are tabled for the third round, and then win the entire pot. Gorath, to the dwarves' dismay, sweeps the gold off the table and marches Owyn out before the windfall can be lost.
Trivia
- Though structured as a gambling game, the party's experience with square stones is not random and the only way to lose is to stop too soon. If the party plays until the end of the interaction, they make a profit of 135g.
