Sloop

A horizontal overhead map of a green landscape framed with green mountains running left from the top center of the image to its center left and a river, partly obscured, running vertically along the right edge. Several green and grey hills dot the landscape. A brown road enters the area from the top right and runs mostly parallel to the bottom until it departs at the image's lower left, and a grey path leaves the road near top right and runs mostly parallel to the mountain range until it descends out of the image further left than the road. Nine buildings are scattered along the path, with six under it and three above. The third building from left below the path is a larger white rectangle, indicating a temple.

Sloop is a Midkemian village in Betrayal at Krondor. It can first be visited in Chapter 1.

Geography

Sloop straddles a path off the King's Highway between Silden and Romney, north of Madame Haphra and south of The Nameless Hideaway.

Locations

  • Shop: Gallowlees' Jewels
  • Brewery: Upturned Keg
  • Mitchel Waylander's house.
  • A soundly constructed wooden house whose solid wooden door is answered by a large sandy-haired man who asks if they are there to have a house built, as nobody builds them better. They tell him they are just passing through and converse for a few moments before leaving.
  • A pretty woman who answers the door holding a leatherbound book from which she has been teaching a class of four or five variously aged children. She apologetically tells the stammering party leader that they are a bit old for her class. As they leave, he admits to Gorath that teachers always make him nervous.
  • An empty house with 127 sovereigns.
  • An abandoned temple.
  • A deserted house whose door swings open freely at the party's knock, whereupon a scrawny trapped cat explodes out of the darkened room and, in passing, costs Gorath 15 Stamina by scratching him across the face.
  • A small house with a crude misspelled sign offering unusual items for sale. Inside, a tall shadowy man with crooked yellow teeth displays a dozen or so items, and the party leader's eye is caught by a broken medallion which the man nervously says he found somewhere in the area. The party leaves without purchasing anything, but the leader notes the implications of the Nighthawk emblem on the medallion.

Chapter 3

The party can learn more about the recent Romney murders by visiting the Upturned Keg, and can help to end the guild troubles in the area by visiting Mitchel Waylander.

Chapter 6

If the party passes Sloop and continues northward, Owyn Beleforte, who has been worried about his relatives in Cavall Keep ever since he and Gorath escaped from Sar-Sargoth, points out that the moredhel infiltrated the Kingdom as far south as the Keep to capture the party and asks to travel north and check that they or the area's Nighthawks had not harmed his family. Gorath agrees to follow where Owyn leads, but warns him that the Kingdom's possible fall to Delekhan's supporters would certainly endanger his family and he should think with his head rather than his heart.

Trivia

  • Although the builder mentions the local temple when the party visits him, Sloop's temple is one of the only deserted ones in the game.
