Caern

Overhead Map of Caern. The map shows a dull powder blue landscape dotted with blue and white hills, blue and white mountain ranges to the north and east, and a large blue and white hill at center. A brown road runs jaggedly under the corner of the hill from west to south, and a gray path loops from the road northward around the hill and forks into two paths which continue south until they rejoin the road. Eight buildings are interspersed along the path and its forks. Three sit eastward of the path above the fork, four lie between the paths south of the fork, and one sits between the brown road and the central hill.

Caern is a Midkemian village in Betrayal at Krondor. It can first be visited in Chapter 4.

Geography

Caern is located in the Northlands, east of Sar-Sargoth and northwest of the fork in the road that leads east to Raglam and south to Wyke.

Locations

  • Shop: Oeirdu and Company
  • A house which Gorath is at first reluctant to approach. At Owyn's urging, he knocks lightly and turns to leave, but stops with a pained expression when the door opens and is reluctantly pulled into the house by a salaciously smiling moredhel woman whom he clearly knows. He backs out after a few moments and tells his grinning companion that she was "just an admirer" who did not have much more news than they already knew.
  • A moredhel woman who is surprised to see Gorath and sends her small child to bring water, but scowls occasionally at Owyn as she and Gorath converse in their own language. Afterwards, Gorath explains that her husband, along with most other men in the area, have left their families to fight for Delekhan. When asked if moredhel generally find it easy to leave their lives behind, Gorath replies that they had no choice.

Graveyard

Given the moredhel custom of only interring their dead in order to inflict grave insult, the presence of a cemetery in Caern implies a great deal of local interpersonal hostility.

  • While the party does not travel east of Sar-Sargoth in the novelization, they are told that Cullich is living in a hut between the Isbandi River and the village of Karne.[1]
