Metahumans (alternatively spelled as, Meta-Humans) is the in-universe term used to describe any human being (or at-least partly human-being) with super-powers. Despite this technical usage, the term tends to be generalized as an umbrella-term for super-powered entities in the DC universe (at-least within the vicinity of Earth).
The prefix meta-, in this context, simply means "beyond"—as in metastable, which is "beyond regular stability; ready to collapse at the slightest disruption", or metamorphosis, which is "the state of going beyond a single shape". So, as an umbrella term "metahuman" simply describes persons and/or abilities beyond normal human limits although the line can often be blurred (E.G. genetic mutations such as deformities or conditions, technology based abilities, powers through the use of steroids, surgically modified physiology, or members of non-human species like aliens, Atlantens, god-descendants, etc).
