Mary Hunt

Mary Hunt (メアリ・ハント) is the fourth daughter of Marquis Hunt, a feeble and weak character in the otome game Fortune Lover who was supposed to have no contact with Katarina Claes.

Appearance

Mary is a beautiful young woman with upper back-length auburn-brown hair that has bangs swept to the right side, doll-like brown eyes, and quite a large bust. She wears a yellow dress with an orange bolero jacket and orange sleeves. She has a plunging neckline with a white rose bralette, and she also wears a light yellow collar with a white gem on it. Additionally, she wears orange heels and orange rose-shaped wristbands on both arms.

Personality

In the original game, Mary is a very gentle and well-mannered lady who is considered to be the perfect noblewoman. She is slightly timid and is quite shy showing by declaring her feelings and affections to other people. Currently, Mary possesses a much more brazen and outspoken personality, who is not afraid to say, to fight and do what she wants. She is a bit of a schemer, who is constantly making plans to turn things in her favor. She has a very cunning and commanding presence, which she hides under a poised and elegant façade.

Background

Mary is Alan Stuart's fiancée who is also the rival character on his route. In the game settings, she didn’t think highly of Katarina Claes, and just like Alan, should have had almost no contact with Katarina, but she’s already one of her best friends now.

Mary Hunt is the youngest of four daughters in Marquis Hunt’s family. Although her mother was a very beautiful person, she wasn’t highly thought of in the mansion because her social status was low. Even so, her father and mother were very much in love. However, her three older half-sisters didn’t seem to think very highly of her. When her mother passed away, the environment around her changed completely. Since her father was often out working, and without her mother anymore, she had no more place in the mansion. Since the servants were not very accepting of her mother as she was low in social status, they would not treat her daughter very well either.

Mary's three older sisters began to harass her once her mother’s protection was lost. They would hide her things, or break them, or call her all sorts of names, such as “Dirty redhead”, “filled with low status”, and “low class.” Hearing this abuse and harassment every day caused Mary's heart to became quite weak, and she became afraid to come into contact with people, as she was always frightened. Her only escape was the courtyard garden where she found peace when taking care of the plants.

In Mary and Katarina's first meeting, she was so nervous, but Mary has completely changed from her always-frightened self in the next seven years. She was excellent in her studies, had such a dignified and elegant manner when she made her social debut, and her wonderful dancing monopolized the topic of conversation during her debut. Thus, she has become exactly like the noble daughter that she was in the game.

However, in the game, Mary loved Alan from the bottom of her heart, but in the current timeline she doesn’t seem to be deeply in love with him to the same extent. They get along normally, but she never really had anything to say about Alan and they hardly ever seemed to meet each other. Additionally, Mary should have become a splendid lady in order to become a lady befitting a prince’s bride, but it seems that she doesn’t actually care too much about being a prince’s wife. She and Katarina would have conversations about their engagement to the princes and so, to assuage Katarina's anxieties, Mary would tell her friend to run away and get married or have kids.

Game Description

In her childhood, Mary often clashed with her half-sisters and grew up hearing mean comments from her sisters every day, losing her self-confidence completely and seeing herself as a useless person. In front of a Mary with such a lack of confidence, appeared Prince Alan Stuart, who praised Mary for her garden that she raised. Her large chest is known to attract men.

As a child, Mary was hated by her siblings, leading her to have no confidence until she met Prince Alan, where he gave his famous line from the game: “Mary’s amazing. You have a green thumb!”. It is said that having a green thumb means your hands have a special talent for growing plants, implying that Mary was an amazing, special existence for having a green thumb. Mary regained some of her lost self-confidence from hearing Prince Alan’s words, and eventually she had come to love Prince Alan more than anyone else.

After that, Mary worked hard every day to become a worthy enough person to stand next to Prince Alan and became a splendid lady with a high reputation that was admired by everyone by the time she entered school.

Game Routes

Mary is the rival character in Fortune Lover in Alan's Route, and therefore she has no routes of her own.

Relationships

Alan Stuart

In Fortune Lover, Mary had an unrequited love for Alan. This was due to Alan commenting on Mary's gardening skills. After that, she developed feelings for him since childhood. Mary was also the main rival for Alan's route. However, she, unlike Katarina Claes, was more elegant and reasonable.

In the present timeline, Alan and Mary are on friendly terms. Mary manipulates his way of thinking and makes him think of Katarina as a friend. Mary, since childhood, always made sure Alan did not realize his feelings. Despite this, both are on good terms and help each other when in need.

In a side story, Alan meets Mary to break off their engagement after Katarina woke up from dark magic and he states that he had feelings for Katarina. Mary had a slip of tongue where she said "You were more serious than I thought. How troublesome," which Alan managed not to hear. Mary declines Alan's proposal saying that if an annulment were to happen, her family would definitely find her another engagement partner. She then states that she had a person she loved as well, which shocked Alan. She continues by stating that even though the person she loves will never reciprocate her feelings, she would rather keep her engagement with Alan who is in a similar situation instead of someone completely different. They then came to an agreement where they would be engaged to each other until the time they both succeeded in having their love reciprocated. After this event, Alan then realizes that behind Mary's gentle façade is a cunning and manipulative woman.

In Verge of Doom, Mary is in love with Alan just like she was in Fortune Lover. She would consider him as her only friend and ally due to the fact that many nobles consider her unapproachable because of her image as the perfect lady. After she becomes friends with Katarina, she still desires to be around her fiancée, but now finds most of her time spent with fellow noblewomen who she considers her friends.

Katarina Claes

In Fortune Lover, Mary and Katarina were fellow rivals for the heroine. They were barely acquainted with each other, and there was not much interaction between them.

In the present story, Mary met Katarina at her garden during a tea party hosted by the Hunt family. Katarina was interested in farming and Mary was interested in gardening. As such, the two befriended each other and became best friends. However, after Katarina sabotaged Alan's line, Mary began developing feelings for her instead of Alan. She would think of manipulative plans to get ahead of her rivals. She even plans to kidnap her to live in a distant land far away from the kingdom, where she could have her all to herself.

In Verge of Doom, after Katarina regains memories of her past life, she was able to become friends with Mary due to their similar interests in gardening. Katarina is one of the few nobles who approach Mary despite her unapproachable and perfect image, which Mary appreciates a lot.

Sophia Ascart

In the present story, Mary and Sophia are good friends thanks to Katarina. At first, Mary did not like Sophia because of how much she was stealing Katarina's attention, but eventually the two would become close through their small novel reading club.

Maria Campbell

In Fortune Lover, Mary was the villainess on Alan's route. After realizing Alan's feelings for Maria, she gives up and steps down with dignity, remaining on good terms with the protagonist.

In the present story, Maria and Mary are both part of the student council, and became good friends thanks to Katarina. The two of them trust each other very much.^[2]

In Verge of Doom, thanks to Katarina, Mary and Maria are able to get along and have tea with each other while in the Student Council room.^[3]

Geordo Stuart

In Fortune Lover, Geordo hardly cared for Mary's existence, just as he did with his own brother, Alan, who is Mary's fiancé. Mary shares the same sentiments as him.

In the present timeline, they were acquaintances at most, but eventually they grow to be friends and rivals, fighting for Katarina's love. They would often ally with each other in order to deal with nobles who do not like Katarina. Geordo acknowledges that Mary's inner personality is similar to his, and can see her true self past her title as a perfect lady.

Sienna Nelson

In Verge of Doom, Sienna and Mary get along thanks to being around each other with Katarina. They are comfortable around each other and are seen together while having tea with Katarina.

Water Magic

Mary possesses water magic. However, as a noblewoman, she is not allowed to use them unless necessary. Her Character Profile states that her magical power is rated a 3 on a 5-point scale.^[4]

Dancing

While Mary is an expert in most skills associated with noblewomen, dancing is noted to be her specialty.

Navigating High Society Politics

In her Character Profile, it is stated that one of her special skills in navigating through and around the politics of noble society.^[5]

Gardening

It is shown that Mary planned a flower garden on her own, which impressed Katarina, who then asked for Mary's help with her own vegetables.

Trivia

• According to Hidaka Nami herself, Mary's concept was of "A beautiful woman yet gorgeous, elegant, and strong-willed."
• Apparently, due to bullying, Mary is not on good terms with her sisters. In the spin-off, she states having negative impressions about them. However, in the TVA version of volume 1, the bullying stopped although they didn't reconcile, at least before entering the academy.
• Mary travels to many social circles to gain information and writes them down in a book which she keeps confidential.
• Mary has a pleasant reputation in high society. In addition to this, she is also skilled in navigating the politics of noble society.
• Whenever Mary thinks about taking a bath with Katarina, she always has to hold back her nose from bleeding every time.^[6]
• Prince Alan and Mary are very similar to Prince Geoffrey and Suzanna.
  • Both males are silver-haired princes who are engaged to highly respected, intelligent, well-mannered Marchioness who are envied in high society.
  • Both royal engagements are maintained so that the respective partners can focus on their interests and passions without the annoyances of marriage proposals (though for Alan and Mary, this arrangement had only been established recently.^[7]) The interests and passions that they desire to pursue are: His brothers for Geoffrey, Magical Research for Suzanna, and Katarina for Alan and Mary.
• While not stated, Mary may be bisexual or pansexual given that in the proper timeline she's in love with Alan, but in love with Katarina in the present timeline.
• She was the most dangerous rival among Geordo's rivals to Katarina's affection, using the fact of being a fellow woman her advantage, also she had her dream of being a posiiton higher than Geordo in order to steal Katarina from him. She was also not going short of blocking Alan's feelings towards Katarina. Also, she always shows her contempt whenever Keith and Katarina became so close for being more than siblings.
