Ayashimon

This is the article on the monstrous race. For the manga series, head to Ayashimon.

Ayashimon (妖し者 Ayashimon?) are yokai who have taken on human forms.

Overview

Other than to blend in with society, the main reason for a yokai wanting to become an Ayashimon is so that they can avoid vanishing in the event that humans cease believing in their existence.

Incarnation

A yokai is able to become an Ayashimon by gathering enough money that is imbued with human emotion, such as from charity and greed, and using it to craft a physical human body. Once the physical form has been assumed, an Ayashimon's yokai powers and form will be converted into a mask. When put on, they regain the forementioned powers and form, which is usually when they are about to go into battle. Despite this, characteristics of an Ayashimon's yokai form will tend to slip out whenever having intense emotions such as anger or nervousness.

Reincarnation

If their physical body is destroyed, an Ayashimon will not necessarily die but rather go through a reincarnation process where their soul is required to wait at least 100 years until they are able to manifest a new vessel.

Human-Ayashimon Coexistence

Ayashimon live amongst the human population by wearing human disguises but are apparently not forbidden from revealing their existence to them (which usually happens in private areas or in a Ayashimon district, such as Kabukicho). There is a rule that Ayashimon can only devour humans when they are within a "Feeding Zone".

Trivia

  • According to Ten, Ayashimon preferably like to wander around during the night.
  • The money that makes up an Ayashimon's body must be replenished from time to time or else the Ayashimon might die.
