The Crossing

The Crossing, also known as Alien: Covenant - Prologue: The Crossing, is a 2017 short film directed by Ridley Scott[1] and starring Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace. Released as part of the viral marketing campaign for Alien: Covenant, the film is a prequel set between the events of Covenant and its predecessor Prometheus, chronicling Elizabeth Shaw and David's journey from LV-223 to Planet 4.

Plot

In order to help her pilot the Engineer Juggernaut and escape LV-223, Shaw repairs David, reattaching his head to his body, and together the two set off in search of the Engineer homeworld. As the journey will be long, David places Shaw into one of the Engineer hypersleep capsules, promising to wake her when they arrive. David spends his time alone learning about the Engineers, their society and their customs.

Some time later, the Juggernaut arrives at an uncharted planet above a large Engineer city. David docks the ship with a large docking vessel floating above the center of the settlement. He opens a large aperture in the Juggernaut's base, looking down upon the city below, stating, "Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair..." as hundreds of Steatite Ampules begin to mobilize behind him.

Cast

Production

Unlike the other short films produced to promote Alien: Covenant, The Crossing was originally intended to be a part of the movie itself, in the form of an extended flashback sequence recounting David's arrival on Planet 4 and his genocide of the Engineers.[1] Thus it was directed by Ridley Scott as part of principle photography. However, this flashback was trimmed for the final cut, with only the final scene, depicting David arriving above Planet 4 and unleashing the black liquid on the population below, being retained. In order to ensure the remaining footage was not wasted, much of it was re-purposed and released as the promotional short film.

Release

The video was originally released on April 26, 2017, as part of Alien Day; it was released through YouTube,[2] as part of the viral marketing campaign for Alien: Covenant.

Home video release

Following its initial online release, the short film was included as a bonus feature on the Alien: Covenant Blu-ray.

Trivia

  • The final sequence in the short, in which David arrives on Planet 4, also appears in Alien: Covenant, in which the scene continues to show him annihilating the Engineers below with the black liquid.
