Rim

"I was part of a detachment sent to investigate loss of contact with a terraformer colony on the planet Rim."
David Wilks (from Aliens: Outbreak (edited release))

GJ1105BC, also dubbed Rim, was a United Americas colony world located in the GJ1105 System of the Outer Rim Territories. In 2179, Rim was the site of a Xenomorph outbreak that saw the destruction of a local terraforming facility.

History

Prior to 2157, Rim was settled by the xenobotanist Henrietta De Pype; following the outbreak of the New Earth Plague in that year, De Pype founded the terraforming colony of Pype's Dream on Rim to house survivors from New Earth Colony who had been shunned by society.

In 2179, a family exploring the crash site of a downed alien spacecraft returned to the colony with a medical emergency. The father, who had discovered a clutch of Xenomorph eggs, had been infected by a facehugger. The chestburster gestating inside him soon hatched, quickly spreading the Xenomorph infestation throughout the colony.[1]

Several weeks passed before a squad of United States Colonial Marine Corps members arrived at Rim to investigate, with the squad losing half their number to the Xenomorph threat during an initial encounter. Marine Corporal David Wilks and a ten–year–old girl named Billie were the only survivors. Evidence of the Xenomorph infestation was covered up and the deaths attributed to the explosion of the colony's reactor.[1]

As of 2186, the quarantine on Rim had been lifted by the Extrasolar Colonization Administration, and the construction of a new colony, Pype's Line, was underway in a bid to exploit Rim's reserves of crude oil.

Climate and terrain

Rim was a rainy world with a breathable atmosphere.[1]

Economy

Resources on Rim included crude oil and neodymium.

Points of interest

The Pype's Dream colony was located on Rim prior to its destruction in 2179. It was later replaced by Pype's Line, which was built to pump oil from beneath the former site of Pype's Dream and funnel it via pipeline to the new colony.

Behind the scenes

Billie's experiences on Rim mirror those of Newt on LV-426. Newt's further adventures after Aliens were thrown out of continuity after her death in Alien3. The planet Rim and the characters of Billie and Wilks are retcons of LV-426, Newt, and Hicks, respectively.
