- "And what about the Oil-Eating bacterium the gene-splicers at the petroleum companies developed to clean up their spills?
Remember how they thought they had it completely in their control?" - ―Tom Strandberg (from Aliens vs. Predator)
Oil-Eater, or Alcanivorax Comedenti, is a synthesized, artificial bacterial agent designed to break down, devour, and eliminate petroleum. Repro-Inhibitors were later designed to counteract the bacterial agent when it ultimately became viral and was utilized as a bio-weapon.
Overview
Originally developed by Weyland Drilling Corp. to help clean up oil spills back in the 2050's, the bacteria somehow became airborne and devoured much of the Earth's oil supplies before gene splicers created a counter bacterium, known as Repro-Inhibitors, to kill it, which is when Earth became reliant of nuclear and alternative energy technologies.
Throughout the Oil Wars of the 2180's, expeditionary forces scrambled to find raw sources of oil as petroleum was fought over across various territories. As the battle for dominance over petrol worlds intensified, retreating forces poisoned oil-rich colonies by introducing oil-eating bacteria.
