Forest Devil

"To have an unreceptive nature in Africa is to be blind. There are things in these wilds that white men have no name for."
John Copeland (from Predator: The Pride at Nghasa)

The Forest Devil was a lone Yautja that conducted a hunt in Kenya during the nineteenth century.

After being overwhelmed by Kenya's deadly wildlife, losing an arm in the process, the hunt ultimately ended in defeat for the Predator, causing him to retreat back to his Mother Ship and leave Earth.

Biography

At some point, a lone Yautja began visiting Earth to conduct hunts in the country of Kenya. The hunter's trips would be numerous, and a superstition soon formed around the Predator; the 'hunting star' would cross the sky once or twice a lifetime, in which it would mark the arrival of the Forest Devil and the killing of men shortly after.

Hunt in Kenya

"Mister Johnny, the runner says it was no simba killed the men. Says it was a ghost, a Forest Devil."

The Forest Devil would arrive once again in August, 1936, this time slaughtering several workers at Nghasa Basin during the construction of a new railroad. It also attacked a nearby village of Kenyan natives, slaughtering the men and stringing their flayed corpses up on the trees.

Word soon spread to Nairobi that the workers had been killed by a Lion, resulting in the Empire hiring expert hunter Sir James Neville Ramsay to kill the beast, though the natives were adamant that it was a demon - "Dudu ya Porini."

Accompanied by several bearers and the rangers John Copeland, Reginald Barrows, alongside their assistant Wanji, Sir James and the group set off for Nghasa Basin on foot, passing by the village that the Predator had terrorized. A village Elder warned the group of the Forest Devil, and a local child pointed them to the flayed corpses of the villagers.

Skirmish with the hunters

"The Webley might have done for him. But I knew better than that. He wasn't on my heels, not because I wounded him. He could have killed me at any moment. No. He let me go."

As Ramsay became delirious and accused the locals of rebellion, the Predator, who was observing them from a distance, blew a hole through Ramsay with his Plasmacaster, killing him. Chaos ensued, causing Reginald to be shot and killed, and the bearers to flee. As Copeland attempted to tend to Reginald's wounds, he called for Wanji to help, only for it to be revealed that he was stabbed from behind by the hunter's Wristblades. The Devil subsequently pursued Copeland, who fled in terror for his life. He stopped and glanced at the local child, but ultimately ignored her, deeming her unworthy game.

Battling Kenya's wildlife and Retreat

"There was nothing for it but flight. Nothing I could do would kill a creature like this. I had but one hope. That Africa itself might kill the beast."
John Copeland (from Predator: The Pride at Nghasa)

The Predator subsequently followed Copeland into a marsh, to which it was attacked by two giant Nile crocodiles. In the struggle, the Predator managed to kill both, at the cost of losing his left arm.

Continuing his pursuit of Copeland, the Devil followed him into an open field, and was then attacked by a clan of ravenous Hyenas. He managed to fend the beasts off, before they too were attacked by a Lion and Lioness. Escaping from the chaos and gravely wounded, the Forest Devil limped away, eventually finding himself at a muddy wallow, Copeland cautiously following him. The Predator dived into the wallow, and managed to access his Mother Ship, activating it and taking off, leaving Earth.

Trivia

  • The Forest Devil is the second Predator to conduct a hunt in Africa, the first being the Rite of Passage Predator from Predator: Rite of Passage.
  • The Forest Devil is notably one of few Yautja characters who is not killed after his defeat at the hands of a human (though it was largely indirect). Instead, he retreats backs to his ship and leaves Earth.
