Wakkanai

Wakkanai was a Southern Water Tribe business magnate and inventor who managed Republic City's water treatment plants on behalf of the city government for two decades.[2]

History

In the 150s AG, Wakkanai met San Ho in Republic City, back when he was known as Yinuo. At first, Wakkanai and Yinuo were rivals and competing inventors, but they learned from each other's work, and competition drove them to greater and greater heights of invention. They soon realized they were stronger together than apart. Though they sometimes frustrated each other, their relationship developed into a partnership devoting to build new ways of helping the city and its people. Working together, Wakkanai and Yinuo discovered a new method for desalinating the water around Republic City, potentially meeting the needs of millions of people flocking to the metropolis with an all-new water treatment facility. Unfortunately, Wakkanai and Yinuo both lacked the funds to execute this idea at a massive scale and sell it to the city. Yinou wanted to expand their operation without outside help, but Wakkanai thought it was safer to turn to outside investors, like the young Iknik Blackstone Varrick. The two inventors grew apart as they tried to find a path forward, each pursuing their own solutions and becoming increasingly distrustful of the other.

Stunned by the potential of the technology, Varrick was eager to invest in Wakkanai's project, though was also eager to get rid of Yinuo. When Wakkanai went looking for more investors, Varrick presented evidence to her that Yinuo's experiments were dangerous after an explosion occurred. Varrick had tampered with the experiment, and Yinuo recognized that the evidence was false, but Wakkanai had already begun to mistrust Yinuo, and refused to listen to him. After city regulators barred Yinuo from doing any further research and divested him from the startup, Varrick helped Wakkanai negotiate a profitable arrangement with the city. Wakkanai took on the responsibility of managing the treatment centers, and in return received generational rights to their profits: If she died, the rights would pass to her daughter, Kiaanii, rather than reverting to the city. Varrick was proud to have negotiated the deal, making sure that Wakkanai could keep her business safely in the family.

Over the next twenty years, Wakkanai maintained the treatment centers and worked with the city government. Even in times of great need, she refused to gouge the city.[3] Wakkanai used her money to make generous donations to fund the building of the Southern Water Tribe Cultural Center, and she was honored with a massive plaque that thanked her for her contributions. She was later featured in an exhibit honoring the "Water Women of Republic City".[4]

However, during that time, Yinou (known as San Ho) also looked for a way to get revenge on Wakkanai and Varrick. He did not want to physically hurt Wakkanai, especially since that would mean that her rights would simply pass to her daughter. San Ho hired lawyers to try to get her rights to the water treatment centers removed, and brought in the Terra Triad to sabotage the plants. Wakkanai was supported by President Zhu Li Moon, but the ultimate decision lay with the Utilities Commission, and Zhu Li could only do so much. When San Ho employed the Terra Triad to kidnap Varrick, he later planned to have Varrick killed in an explosion at the water treatment facility that would also discredit Wakkanai.[5] When Zhu Li was alerted of Varrick's disappearance, she employed a team of trusted individuals to resolve the complex situation.[6]

Personality

Wakkanai was charismatic and easygoing, but also had a strong sense of responsibility to the people she came from, the businesses that she grew, and the city that she adopted. She generally sought what was best for others with a true nobility of spirit, and her earlier dealings with Yinuo later hung over her.[1]

Abilities

Wakkanai was a great inventor and entrepreneur. She considered her water treatment facilities to be her greatest work for the city.[1]
