"Unwinding" is the fifth chapter of The Dawn of Yangchen.

Overview

Kavik's parents question their son about his whereabouts and his job when Avatar Yangchen pays them an unexpected visit.

Synopsis

In his home, Kavik comes out from his room and asks his mother if he has received any letters. The answer is no, as usual. Tapeesa brings the coockpot to the table and Kavik's father joins them as he asks his son what put him in the square so late. The waterbender lies and says Old Chan, his old employer, asked him to do a favor and pick up an order for him at the apothecary. However, Ujurak replies that he stopped by Chan's earlier, who claimed he had not seen Kavik in weeks. The boy, realizing his mistake, confesses he was working on the other side of town and assures his parents that he was not doing anything dangerous. He adds that he had not told them he left Chan's because they worry about every little change in his life, but his father asks him to at least tell them who his new boss is.

When Kavik does not respond, Tapeesa tells him that he knows where this path ends, referring to his older brother's disappearance. The boy begins to argue with his parents, losing control and pouring out his pent-up frustration, and says that when he is out, he is following leads and working to find Kalyaan. Ujurak and Tapeesa look at him with a hurt expression, worried about losing him as well.

A knock comes at the door and, when Kavik's mother opens it, she lets out a cry as she sees Avatar Yangchen standing outside. She greets Tapeesa and spots Kavik inside, smiling at him. Yangchen introduces herself and asks to come inside to talk for a moment.
