Tsering

Airbender

Tsering was the librarian of the Western Air Temple during the childhood of Avatar Yangchen.[1]

History

As librarian of the Western Air Temple, Tsering was informed that Yangchen was the Avatar before the child had been informed. When Yangchen began experiencing strong visions of people she had known in her past lives, the temple relied on Tsering's knowledge to understand what Yangchen was talking about if the knowledge had become particularly obscure.

Tsering worked closely with Jetsun, a young nun and spiritual guide who Yangchen viewed as an older sister. When Jetsun informed her that Yangchen was in the infirmary and babbling about Mesose, Tsering theorized that it was either the scholar from the Ru Ming era, a village in the Hu Xin Provinces, or someone that she had no idea about. Deciding that the first was most likely, Jetsun and Tsering scoured the different sections of the ancient vault, and while Tsering could not find any leads, Jetsun was able to find a relevant book. As the younger nun dashed to the infirmary with speed enhanced by her airbending, Tsering told Jetsun to use her glider next time. Tsering entered the infirmary later after Jetsun had been able to soothe Yangchen, arriving without a glider. When prompted by Jetsun, Tsering explained that Mesose was a companion of Avatar Gun and a skilled poet and engineer who died in Ha'an when Gun failed to hold back a tsunami. Realizing Yangchen had been struggling with the grief of many past lives, Jetsun noted that Yangchen would likely figure out who she was before she was sixteen. Tsering stroked Yangchen's hair as she slept, wondering what the temple was going to do with her.[1]

Tsering and Abbess Dagmola acted as assistants when Jetsun guided Yangchen into the Spirit World for the first time, deferring to Jetsun as guide in spite of her age. The two assistants set up incense, with the abbess ringing the meditation bell as the Avatar and her spirit guide crossed over.[2] When Yangchen woke up, Jetsun did not, as she was trapped in the Spirit World. As Dagmola cradled Jetsun's body, Tsering stared at Yangchen, begging to know what had happened. Since Jetsun's body was empty of its spirit, she soon passed away.[3][4]

Abilities

As librarian of the Western Air Temple, Tsering was highly knowledgeable and able to easily recall several facts that were obscure to most educated people. She could also research historical documents quickly and was able to find out who exactly Mesose was and their relationship to Avatar Gun a short while after she first heard Yangchen speaking about the name. Tsering was also a capable airbender, and managed to jump between the spires of the Western Air Temple without the use of her glider, even though she was somewhat older than Jetsun.[1]
