Pyre Howler

Neutral

The crew of the Pyre Howler, also known as the Howlers, was a ship and a pirate faction that was part of the Crimson Sails Armada during the era of Avatar Aang. The crew consisted of a personal retinue of Head Captain Ningka, and was previously loyal to Kangana. Though not the largest member group of the Crimson Sails Armada, it consisted of its most skilled and vicious corsairs.[1]

History

During the Hundred Year War, the crew of the Pyre Howler carried out raids under the shadow of darkness. The tell-tale signs of a Howler raid were the missing items they stole, a faint howl of victory echoing through the twilight hours, and a fire that would spread causing chaos if not extinguished quickly.[2]

When Head Captain Ningka took control of Crimson Sails, she also took over Kangana's ship and crew. Under Kangana's leadership, the crew was level-headed and disciplined. However, under Ningka's control, the crew used the change in power to start exerting their control over the other crews of the island, believing to be the ones in charge. Kangana kept a short leash on her crew, as they were considered the most skilled group of pirates on the island. When most of the crew had a chance, they voted her out and put Ningka in place, as they believed that these were rights that their old captain should have allowed them. However, a growing minority of the crew started reconsidering their choice and felt some guilt for ousting Kangana. While they acquired more freedom, the other crews became more hostile than before.[1][2]

The crew of the Pyre Howler began to interfere in every sort of conflict on the island, attempting to break up conflicts and taxing on each ship that brough in goods from raids, which led to the other crews grow unhappy with their methods.[1] They acted as a sort of guard on Crimson Sails, making sure any incident was reported back to their Captain Ningka.[2]

While the Howlers saw themselves as the best pirates in the armada, as their captain was the high captain of the whole island, their actual numbers were fewer than they really appreciated.

Design

The Pyre Howler was a sleek three-masted ship flying the standard of a skull in front of a full moon. Unlike more flashy pirate ships, the Pyre Howler was painted in dull colors to move around unobtrusively and wouldn't stand out next to other ships of the same make save for its banner.

Captain Ningka spent most of her time on Crimson Sails in her private quarters on the Pyre Howler when not dealing with business on the island itself.[3]

Notable members

  • Captain Ningka — Elected captain of the faction, elected after Captain Kangana.
