"That was awful! Where's your sense of balance? Symmetry? Contrast?" |
— Mui to Lee after making him perform a haiku.[1] |
Mui was the head of kitchen staff at the estate of the falsely identified Avatar, Yun.[1]
History
As head of kitchen staff, Auntie Mui was responsible for Yun's servants, including Kyoshi. She could be strict at times, chiding Kyoshi for not using the service entrance when Yun had visitors. Mui once gave Kyoshi concealer to cover her freckles, disapproving of Kyoshi's complexion darkening in the sun.[1]
At one point, Mui chaperoned Kyoshi and several other maids on a few days of leave in Qinchao, and was left with Kyoshi as the other maids ditched them to sample wine and flirt with actors by an outdoor theaters. The entire visit went on entirely uneventful and the group returned home safely.[4]

Mui liked to enforce high culture among her workers, getting them to recite poetry in the kitchen. This backfired on Mui when, after Lee's poor attempt at reciting poetry, Kelsang began to recite a raunchy work shanty, and Mui was scandalized when Lee and Kyoshi joined in.[1]
After Kyoshi fled the estate following the discovery that she was the true Avatar, Mui informed Jianzhu of the turn of events. Realizing that Mui would have been unable to stop Kyoshi, Jianzhu did not punish her, but kept the kitchen staff uncertain of his next command.[2]
When Jianzhu invited a conclave of Earth Kingdom sages to Yokoya, Mui was overwhelmed with the number of prestigious guests and the food she might have to prepare. Jianzhu told her simply to prepare tea for the sages, who were later poisoned en masse.[5]
After the poisoning and Kyoshi's revelation as the true Avatar, Mui was one of the few workers to stay on at the mansion. Over a year later, she was overjoyed to see both Yun and Kyoshi return to the estate, not knowing that they intended to confront one another. Yun asked Mui to prepare a big dinner for them, and Kyoshi asked Mui to cook rare stalknose mushrooms, sending her on a futile mission in the village shops to clear the mansion for their final battle.[6] After the mansion was destroyed, Kyoshi continued to care for Mui, and the Avatar considered it important to keep her safe.[3]
