Li Gong

This article is about the Old Cranefish Town resident. For the Fire Nation general, see Gong.

Li Gong was a traditionalist resident of Republic City's historic district of Old Cranefish Town. He was a member of the large, wealthy, and powerful Li family.[1][2]

History

Li Gong was the uncle of Li Yaquin, who owned enough stake in the Red Wing Opera House without any agreement from the other Lis. Li Gong was one of the very few Lis to realize how much ownership Yaquin's mother, Li Joon, had been able to consolidate. Among those few, he was the only one to know that she was planning to sell, even though it conflicted with family tradition.[1] As a traditionalist, Li Gong desperately wanted her to refuse all offers. He started to try to convince his niece to think carefully before selling, and to respect the ways of their family. However, Yaquin did not listen to him had no interest in being slowed down anymore.[1][2]

As a result of Yaquin's behavior, Gong came up with a new plan. He wanted to create an Old Cranefish Town Preservation Association, which would pool the funding and influence of the district's oldest families. The Preservation Association would enact rules for all of Old Cranefish Town, effectively controlling who could sell and when. Owners of property in the district would automatically be entered into the Association, and would get a vote, but they would be bound to Association rules. Gong was fairly sure that he had enough power to push local politicians to ratify these rules, and even thought he may be able to persuade Mayor Ailani. However, Yaquin resolved to never let her uncle thwart her plans, knowing that the business interests to which she was hoping to sell would also not let go of the property. Yaquin planned to let those business interests know where Gong was, so they could dispatch their mercenaries on him and force him to give up his plan.[2]
