Jargala Omo

Earthbender

Jargala Omo[1] is an earthbending mobster and leader of the Creeping Crystal Triad. In 174 AG, the turf of her triad was challenged by Tokuga and his Triple Threats, though she managed to hold on to her territory due to the timely intervention of the Republic City Police.[2]

History

Jargala proudly traces her lineage of crime back to the era of Kyoshi, when the Omos were daofei. While her ancestors weren't always at the top of the heap in the criminal underworld, they always survived, no matter what kind of dirty deal they had to make.[3]

Following the destruction of downtown Republic City during the invasion of the United Republic of Nations, the triads lost their territory and scattered, engaging each other in a turf war over the land that was not ravaged by Kuvira and her troops.

Tokuga chi-blocks Jargala

It was during this chaotic time that Jargala led her Creeping Crystals in the defense of their turf against the Triple Threat Triad. Outnumbering their opponents, they managed to push them into a corner. When Tokuga entered the fight, she told him the Triple Threats should give up. Tokuga rose to the challenge, however, and quickly chi-blocked all the Creeping Crystals surrounding him, Jargala included. Although incapacitated, Jargala refused to surrender her turf. Just as Tokuga intended to kill her, however, the Republic City Police intervened, and Jargala ordered her Creeping Crystals to retreat, while warning Tokuga that the fight was not over.[2]

After construction began on housing for the evacuees, Jargala, alongside two members of the Creeping Crystal Triad, visited Asami at her temporary office during the construction. Upon Jargala's entry, Asami asked the triad member if she could help her, but Jargala, in fact, it was she who could help Asami, whom she addressed as sweetheart. Jargala seemed interested in Asami's construction project, adding that it would be a pity if she would not be able to finish it. In turn, Asami, angrily warned her not to threaten her or call her "sweetheart", provoking one of Jargala's companions to angrily question if Asami knew who Jargala was. Jargala ordered him to stop, as she understood that Asami did not want to offend her and instead continued persuading Asami to accept a small protection fee for herself and the construction from the Triple Threats. However, once more, Asami denied the agreement and showed the earthbender her electrified glove. Unamused, Jargala asked Asami if she knew how to use that "cute weapon", to which she answered that she would be happy to give the Creeping Crystal a demonstration. Jargala said any demonstration would have to wait until later and began walking to the door, to the surprise of her partners. Upon the other members' questions, Jargala answered that Asami was not thinking straight, and it would be better to leave a couple of days that allow the nonbender to reconsider her offer.

Jargala didn't have Asami Sato

The following night, Jargala was playing pool when Korra, followed by Mako and Bolin, burst into the triad's hideout, looking for Jargala. Upon seeing the Avatar, Jargala remarked to Korra that she did not like that people barging in on her, least of all the Avatar. Enraged, Korra ignored her warning and asked her where Asami was. Jargala answered honestly that Asami was not at the triad's hideout, although Korra did not believe her. Jargala encouraged Korra and her friends to search for her in the Creeping Crystal Triad's hideout, and when they did not find her, Jargala reaffirmed herself before warning Korra to disappear from her sight.[1]

Shortly after, the Creeping Crystal Triad was attacked again by Tokuga, who came with mecha suits and explosives. Fearing for their safety, the Creeping Crystals abandoned their hideout and left their turf to the Triple Threats. They fled to a small abandoned building and continued to conduct business there. Days later, Jargala earthbent a piece of jennamite when a triad member asked her if she was willing to let Korra in, to which she agreed. Korra approached Jargala and said she realized that it had been Tokuga who had kidnapped Asami. Jargala asked if she was there to apologize, but Korra instead said she was seeking a deal. She was looking for help using secret passages throughout Republic City to find Tokuga, Jaragala asked if Korra wanted revenge, but Korra replied that all she was seeking was Asami's location.

Jargala displays jennamite

Jargala responded by displaying the properties of jennamite, using it to encase a plant in crystal, displaying the way it encased organic matter until there was no escape. She declared Tokuga was going to remember why the Creeping Crystals had once been the most feared triad in Republic City. Afterward, she led Korra, Mako, Bolin, and one of her henchmen out through the passages, using the glowing properties of jennamite as a guide. As they reached Tokuga, Jargala, her follower, and Korra began attacking the Triple Threats. Jargala encased a mecha suit in jennamite, as she turned to throw the rock she had used as a guide at him. Tokuga caught the rock, remarking she would need something stronger to throw him off, until the jennamite begun encasing his arm. Jargala stood over him and remarked that it was time he learned not to mess with a creeping crystal. When Tokuga smashed the rock open and fled, Jargala announced to her triad and the Avatar that he was escaping with Asami. Korra began to run after Asami, yelling at Jargala to come with her. Jargala said she was not leaving her turf in the hands of "goons" and continued to fight off the Triple Threats alongside her subordinate, shouting at Korra to go without her.[4]

Following Tokuga's rebellion, Jargala returned to seeing how the triad could expand its profits. She contacted a former triad member, Jiro, who went legit and ended up managing to run the Stoneriver Auction House in the fashionable Harmony Park district.[5] She started to try to pressure him into auctioning stolen and illicit goods. Jiro was torn on what to do, as while he owed a lot to Jargala, he was very much aware of how dangerous the Creeping Crystals were. The mob boss eventually convinced Jiro to host an illegal auction night for the prominent figures of Republic City, selling valuables looted by the triad during the Earth Empire attack on the city. However, the other triads were not pleased that Jargala was about to secure a serious line of cash with the potential to make it legitimate, and the Agni Kai Triad tried to intimidate Jiro to call off the event.[6]

Other day-to-day business for Jargala included watching the other triads for threats to her power. In particular, the Terra Triad was viewed with suspicion, as they had started turning up in the streets with a lot of new hardware. She also wanted to diversify the ranks of her soldiers, especially by recruiting new airbenders in Dragon Flats to her side instead of losing them to the Air Nation or the Terra Triad. She also wanted access to the halls of power and connections who could get her into polite conversation with the likes of Mayor Ailani and President Zhu Li Moon. Jargala did not care if she was legitimate herself, but knew that the legitimate authorities could do plenty for her if she put pressure on them.[3]

Also around this time, Jargala kept an eye on her lieutenant, Amrita, as she tried to muscle her way into the mover industry. Jargala knew that Amrita was obsessed with movers, and demanded that she come back with something real and profitable within a month, or the lieutenant would be assigned to a different district, and the Creeping Crystals would muscle in on something more lucrative, such as the waste disposal industry.[7] She made it clear to Amrita that she was out on a limb in trying to extort Varrimovers International, and couldn't ask for anything more other than her team of twenty committed earthbenders.[8]
