Jade

This article is about the shopkeeper. For the critic, see Jade (critic).

Jade was a shopkeeper from Omashu who ran Jade's General Goods.[1]

History

Winter 99 AG

In winter 99 AG, Jade saw Avatar Aang when he visited Omashu.[2] She continued to operate her shop after he left, selling a variety of items to her customers.[1]

A short while after Team Avatar left the city, Jade noticed that sales were down, as it was hard getting quality antiques into Omashu. Hoping to find something to sell, Jade traveled to Hegemon's Folly, a huge mausoleum located at the tip of a peninsula located west of the city. Chef Lee, owner of Double Dumpling in Omashu, joined her on her travels, but the pair got lost. Lee told her that the mausoleum was soon coming up, and that they could soon find artifacts to sell, while Jade remarked that she did not realize how wild it was near Hegemon's Folly. At that moment, Jade and Lee encountered a group of Fire Nation soldiers and local collaborators, who suspected the pair was searching for the riches that Captain Masaru had sent them to find. Lee denied that they were doing so, claiming they had just been on a date, though Jade did not know what to say when Lee asked her to affirm his story. When one of the soldiers aggressively asked them to answer properly, Jade denied his assumption, but the soldier asked the rest of the group to beat the answer out of the pair. However, Jiang, who was among the group, decided to stand up for Lee and Jade, taking on the rest of Masaru's forces and hired civilians while denouncing them as bullies.

Jiang managed to defeat the group intimidating Lee and Jade, and she proclaimed Jiang their savior. However, the pirate stated she was no hero, and asked what the two were really doing out in Hegemon's Folly. Jade explained that they were coming to find antiques she could sell in her shop, and Jiang explained that she was going to crack into the mausoleum and plunder whatever she found there. Jiang also mentioned that she was the captain of the Flying Wolfbat, and Jade recognized her as an infamous pirate. Jiang proudly admitted that she was, asking Jade if that was a problem, but the shopkeeper said that it was none at all, and that she was in Jiang's debt after being saved.

As the trio approached the mausoleum, they noticed the entrance to the mausoleum was flooded and the door sealed. With Jiang wanting them to look for clues, Jade noticed an inscription on a stone nearby, which spoke about an insatiable fisherman blind to bigger fish. The group inspected the statues together, with Jade speaking up for Lee numerous times as he and Jiang developed a friendly rivalry. Jade also noticed that Jiang was not like what she imagined most pirates to be when she spoke about the problems people had living in poverty. Eventually, they turned the statues to a position in line with the inscription's riddle, and the water blocking their entrance was drained, allowing them to enter the mausoleum. While Lee was worried about robbing a crypt, Jade was enthusiastic about finding items to sell in her shop.

Jade noticed it was dark when they went inside the mausoleum, asking if anyone had a light, to which Wen responding in the affirmative. Jade, Lee, and Jiang were frightened, believing they had seen a ghost, which in turn frightened Wen. The shopkeeper noticed that Wen was, in fact, alive, to which the archeologist responded they certainly hoped they were, as it would not have been long before they perished if Jade and the others had not arrived, explaining that they trapped themself inside after accidentally touching a lever. However, at that moment, they were confronted by Masaru and his company. Wen explained they were not good with fighting, leaving the encounter to Jiang. The pirate was exasperated at being left to handle the combat herself, but Jade cheered her on as she battled the opponents. Jade was also confused when Jiang insulted Masaru by saying he looked like he had one foot in the grave and another in "a bowl of fermented kelp", and Lee explained that it would be slippery. Jade, Lee, and Wen celebrated when Jiang defeated Masaru and his allies, with Jade saying that perhaps not all pirates were bad, and remarking that she had never seen such heroism up close. Lee pointed out that she had met the Avatar, and that he had sold dumplings to Aang, which caused Jade to despair about sales at her own shop. Lee told her that she might have some luck with what they had found, but Wen pointed out that none of the relics were particularly valuable to most, unless Jade was able to convince tourists it was treasure from the ancient world. Jiang expressed her disappointment, but explained that her crew was waiting on her and said her farewells, telling all of them that she would have a job waiting for them if any of them chose the pirate life.

After Jiang left, Wen said they could still keep looking through the rubble in the mausoleum to help out Jade's shop. While Jade was cautious about Masaru and his soldiers regrouping, Lee pointed out they could look through some smaller tombs. As they reached a smaller crypt, Lee told Jade to get back from a platypus bear ready to attack, saying he would save her. While Wen was skeptical about how Lee could defeat the wild animal, the chef managed to hold it off. Jade thanked Lee for saving her, which caused him to blush deeply. Jade proceeded to check the crypt for its treasures.[2]

Spring 100 AG

In spring 100 AG, Jade was living in Omashu when the city had been occupied by the Fire Nation and renamed to "New Ozai". A Fire Nation guard tried to collect taxes from Jade, but the shopkeeper apologized, explaining she did not have enough money to pay him. Stumbling over her words, Jade tried to assure the guard that she would have the owed amount if given more time. Although the guard told Jade that this was the last time he would give her an extension, Princess Azula picked up on the incident and accused the guard of treachery for being relatively understanding of Jade's position. This led to Azula demanding the guard to go to check and collect what was rightfully owed to New Ozai. Azula's actions outraged several other civilians, leading to an uprising which was put down by the princess and her allies: Mai and Ty Lee.[3]
