Dorje was the abbot of the Southern Air Temple and leader of the Air Nomads that resided there during the Era of Kuruk[3] and early into the Era of Kyoshi.[2]
History
Dorje managed the Southern Air Temple at least as early as 316 BG, at which point he was allowing Kelsang, one of Avatar Kuruk's companions and also a resident of the temple, to be groomed to eventually take over his duties. However, Dorje later changed his mind after a series of events caused Kelsang to fall out of his good graces.[3][4] These events included the time when Kelsang took the Avatar relics without his permission in 305 BG in order to identify the next Avatar,[2] as well as the consequences of Kelsang destroying a splinter fleet of Fifth Nation pirates.[5][6]
Personality
While many Air Nomads had a reputation for their peaceful nature, fun-loving attitude, and appetite for baked pastries,[7][8][9] Dorje reportedly eschewed many of these customs. According to Kelsang, with whom he had a falling out,[3] he possessed an aversion to fun, distaste for fruit pies, and wrathful mood when disobeyed.[2][1]

- Dorje (Tib: རྡོ་རྗེ་།, Wylie: rdo rje THL: Dorjé) is the Tibetan equivalent of Sanskrit Vajra (Skt: वज्र English: thunderbolt), a legendary and ritual weapon symbolizing the indestructibility of diamond and the force of a lightning bolt. In Hinduism, it is wielded by Indra, King of the Devas. In Tibet, it is the namesake of Vajrayāna Buddhism which is the largest branch of Buddhism practiced there.
