Batwoman is a television series based on the DC Comics character with the same name starring Ruby Rose in Season 1 and Javicia Leslie since Season 2. It is developed by Greg Berlanti, and produced by Caroline Dries. A pilot was ordered on January 3, 2019 at The CW. On May 7, 2019, it was picked up to series on the network. It premiered on October 6, 2019. On October 25, 2019, it was originally revealed to have been picked up for a full season consisting of 22 episodes.[1] However, the number of episodes for Season 1 was reduced to 20 due to production shutting down in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.[2]
The CW renewed Batwoman for a second season on January 7, 2020,[3] and on October 29, 2020, it was announced to premiere on January 17, 2021.[4] On February 3, 2021, Batwoman was renewed for a third season by The CW which premiered on October 13, 2021.[5] On April 29, 2022, Batwoman was cancelled by The CW.[6]
Synopsis
| Kate Kane never planned to be Gotham's new vigilante. Three years after Batman mysteriously disappeared, Gotham is a city in despair. Without the Caped Crusader, the Gotham City Police Department was overrun and outgunned by criminal gangs. Enter Jacob Kane and his military-grade Crows Private Security, which now protects the city with omnipresent firepower and militia. Years before, Jacob's first wife and daughter were killed in the crossfire of Gotham crime. He sent his only surviving daughter, Kate Kane, away from Gotham for her safety. After a dishonorable discharge from military school and years of brutal survival training, Kate returns home when the Alice in Wonderland gang targets her father and his security firm, by kidnapping his best Crow officer Sophie Moore. Although remarried to wealthy socialite Catherine Hamilton-Kane, who bankrolls the Crows, Jacob is still struggling with the family he lost, while keeping Kate –– the daughter he still has –– at a distance. But Kate is a woman who’s done asking for permission. To help her family and her city, she’ll have to become the one thing her father loathes –– a dark knight vigilante. With the help of her compassionate stepsister, Mary, and the crafty Luke Fox, the son of Wayne Enterprises’ tech guru Lucius Fox, Kate Kane continues the legacy of her missing cousin, Bruce Wayne, as Batwoman. Still holding a flame for her ex-girlfriend, Sophie, Kate uses everything in her power to combat the dark machinations of the psychotic Alice, who's always somewhere slipping between sane and insane. Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate soars through the shadowed streets of Gotham as Batwoman. But don't call her a hero yet. Trivia
- The only actor to physically appear in every episode of the series was Camrus Johnson (Luke Fox). However, Rachel Skarsten (Beth Kane/Alice) made a photo appearance in "Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part Two" as Beth Kane from Earth-99. Additionally, Javicia Leslie (Ryan Wilder) appeared in every episode of the series after signing on as a series regular in Season 2.
- Batwoman and DC's Legends of Tomorrow were the first series in the Arrowverse to be cancelled, aside from the retroactively added Constantine.
- The only actors that been part of the Main Cast every season are Rachel Skartsten, Meagan Tandy, Nicole Kang, and Camrus Johnson.
- The only actors that have appear every season of Batwoman at least once are Camrus Johnson, Nicole Kang, Rachel Skartsten, and Meagan Tandy.
- Batwoman was originally supposed to have 7 seasons, but it was cancelled by The CW after the third season because the new owners of the network weren't interested on continuing the show.
- This is the shortest Arrowverse series with just 3 seasons outside of Legacy Shows.
