Chinese animation (simplified Chinese: 中国动画; traditional Chinese: 中國動畫; pinyin: Zhōngguó dònghuà) or Donghua, in a narrow sense, refers to animation made in China. Unlike the anime term, 3D CG animated films are included as part of donghua as well as "Webtoons" produced by corporations or sometimes just individuals. "Webtoons" were generally flash animations ranging anywhere from amateurish to high quality, hosted publicly on various websites. However, with Adobe Flash technology in steep decline, these more independent animations probably are moving to a different platform.[1][2]
Donghua are part of the entertainment segment known as ACG (動漫遊戲 or 动漫游戏, dòngmànyóuxì), short for "anime, comics, and games". A further extension which includes light novels is ACGN, or "anime, comics, games, and novels". Another term for the genre as a whole is erciyuan (二次元, èrcìyuán), meaning "two-dimensional space". One of the most popular websites for ACGN content is bilibili.[3] Most of the donghua well-known outside of China are ONA or streamed/web animation.
