Zanku, also known as Zanku the Beheader or Zank, was a notorious serial killer. He was known for severing off the heads of his victims, as his moniker implies. Night Raid was contracted to track him down and kill him.
History
Zanku was originally an executioner for one of the Empire's prisons, but went mad from guilt after taking countless lives. He showed symptoms of schizophrenia, hearing dark voices that drove him closer to insanity with each passing day. He eventually escaped his position after stealing the warden's Teigu, Spectator. He was wanted by the Imperial Police ever since. Zanku began his rampage, killing random individuals throughout the Empire to sate his bloodlust, beheading his victims. Soon, Night Raid was contracted to find and assassinate him. Akame and Tatsumi both fought Zanku, and after a struggle, he gets his throat slashed by Akame, and was finally able to find peace as he died.
After Zanku was killed, Night Raid took the Teigu back to their base, where Tatsumi briefly tried it, which ended in a failure due to compatibility problems. After it rejected Tatsumi, Night Raid sent it to Revolutionary Army HQ for safekeeping.
Appareance
Zanku was a tall and muscular man with very marked facial features, including his sinister smile that extends almost the entire length of his face. He has blue eyes, short, slicked blond hair kept with horn-like bangs (similar to Budo) as well a pair of dark gray headphones. He wears his Teigu Spectator in the front of his chest, with his clothing consisting of a long coat with a steel, shell-like object on the shoulder. Under the coat, he wears a white shirt and a navy blue tie, he also wears black gloves on his hands along with pants of the same color as well as brown boots and a blue number 8 decorated on the hand blade-holder he had.
Equipment and Skills
Zanku was the user of the Teigu, Spectator, a headpiece that allowed him many mental abilities, including hearing the thoughts of others, and accurately predicting their next move. He uses a pair of hand blades that look like Katars to cut his opponents ruthlessly.
He was quite fast and powerful, being able of going toe-to-toe with Akame, even managing to give her a small wound thanks to the Spectator foresight ability, only losing to her when his hand blades got broken.

- In the official English subtitles, Zanku's name is spelled as Zank. His title was also translated into multiple terms for beheading in English, such as Beheader, Executioner and Headhunter.
- The name Zank means "quarrel" in German.
