Background
Dana Elaine Owens (born March 18, 1970) is a well-known singer, rapper and actress, and is considered one of the pioneers of the hip-hop movement. She took her stage name from a book of Arabic names when she was 8 and released her first album "All Hail the Queen" in 1989.
She since branched out into acting, starring in the sitcom Living Single and earning critical acclaim for her role as Matron "Mama" Morton in the 2002 film version of the musical Chicago, for which she earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She also portrayed "Motormouth" Maybelle in the 2007 film version of the musical Hairspray.
